Trauma Healing
We like to integrate our knowledge and your unique system when treating trauma. We offer the following approaches to be customized to your needs.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic approach designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. By processing of these memories, EMDR can help individuals move past the negative emotional and psychological effects that often accompany trauma. During EMDR sessions, a trained therapist guides the individual through specific procedures while the client focuses on distressing memories, helping to reprocess the information in a way that reduces the emotional charge. This process can lead to a significant decrease in symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, promoting a sense of healing.
One of the key mechanisms of EMDR is its incorporation of bilateral stimulation or “Buzzies”. This technique aids in the integration of trauma-related memories by mimicking the natural processing mechanisms of the brain, much like what occurs during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. As the brain works through these memories in conjunction with the bilateral stimulation, clients may experience a reduction in vividness and emotional distress associated with the traumatic events. Over time, many clients find that they can think about their experiences without significant pain or anxiety, facilitating a more positive outlook on life.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is a unique and effective approach for treating trauma by recognizing and addressing the various parts within an individual. Each part has its own perspective, memories, and role in the person's understanding of trauma. IFS helps clients uncover and understand how these parts respond to their experiences. For instance, a person may have a part that feels deeply hurt by past trauma, while another part may act as a protector, trying to shield the individual from further pain. By facilitating communication between these parts, IFS allows individuals to explore the underlying emotions and beliefs tied to their trauma without judgment, fostering a sense of safety and acceptance.
Moreover, IFS promotes healing through the concept of the “Self,” which represents the core of who we are—compassionate, curious, and calm. In trauma treatment, IFS encourages clients to access this Self to lead and nurture their inner parts. This process helps individuals transform their relationship with trauma, reducing feelings of shame and isolation while promoting self-compassion and understanding. As clients learn to listen to and care for their wounded parts, they can release the burdens of past traumas, leading to greater emotional resilience and well-being. Overall, IFS provides a structured yet flexible framework for individuals to integrate their experiences and foster a more harmonious internal system.
